Storm Cottage

Located on the east coast of Great Barrier Island a black rough sawn timber box faces the sea. A pair of bedrooms and ensuites are set either side of a central living space. The dark exterior palette includes a layer of perforated metal screens. Internal walls and floors are oiled oak boards.

The building is off the grid, powered by solar panels with independent systems for water collection and treatment. This is a retreat that provides shelter, warmth and comfort within the wildness of the remote setting.

Project Details: The floor area is 100m2. Construction was completed at the end of 2012. Fearon Hay’s project team was led by Robin Gieselhardt. Tim Hay and Jeff Fearon are the design architects.

Interiors are in collaboration with Penny Hay. Photography is by Patrick Reynolds.
