Courtyard House

Set closely amongst neighbours, this design required privacy.

Precast concrete slabs form courtyard walls and a screened perimeter. A lightweight horizontal roof form balances across these slabs and provides cover for the sleeping, eating, and living spaces of this pared back home.

Definition of interior and exterior spaces is blurred with fully retractable glazing, allowing the spaces within the house to feel as much part of the courtyard as the exterior terrace and pool.

Project Details:

The internal floor area is approximately 260m2, and construction was completed in mid-2001. Fearon Hay’s project team was led by Gordon Gallagher with Sam Atcheson. Tim Hay and Jeff Fearon are the design architects. Photography is by Simon Devitt.
